Harrismith Beach, I Felt like a Castaway!

I first came across Harrismith Beach during the summer of 2005 when I paid a visit to Bottom Bay, but unfortunately I never had the opportunity to explore it. It isn’t too difficult to find Harrismith Beach, even with the rather dubious maps that you find in Barbados and the lack of decent road signs.

Harrismith Beach is located in the Parish of St Philip in Barbadso and it is on the Southeast coast of the Island. I parked at Bottom Bay, basically because I knew how to get there and that it was only a short walk to Harrismith Beach from there.

To reach Harrismith Beach, I walked along the cliff top passing the local sheep and cows as I admired the amazing view of the deserted beach and the palm trees down below, as I searched for the old stone steps that I was told would lead down to it.

Just before I came to the steps leading down to Harrismith Beach, I stopped and had a wee look around the old ruined building, which use to be the Harrismith Hotel. I couldn’t but help wonder what had happened to this once grand building and why it was now in such dilapidated state. If only I had the money to buy and restore this old house. I could create something truly amazing.

I eventually found the steps leading down to Harrismith Beach; there must have been around 20 old stone steps, which were in remarkable good condition leading down to the beach. The steps were easily navigated by my wife and two 10-year-old family members.

For me Harrismith Beach was as amazing as it looked from a distance, it was a totally deserted stretch of beach, which must have been about 1km long. I almost felt like I had been castaway on a deserted island with my family, It felt real good to feel like a castaway for an hour or so.

The sea was far too rough to swim in at Harrismith Beach, if you were to go into the sea, there is a very good chance you wouldn’t come out in one piece.

It really was a great feeling sitting on this deserted beach in Barbados, watching the  waves crashing against the shoreline and the rocks. There wasn’t a tourist in sight, which made things even sweeter. I just wish I had a few ice-cold bottles of Piton with me, that would have been heavenly.

    I have been to Barbados three times and it is truly a fascinating island with friendly people. I had the pleasure of meeting some really friendly elderly people who took me around the Island to see some other locations, after meeting them in Oistins. I got to view several places. I don’t recall Harrismith Beach but I will make a note and visit next time I am there.
