My Living Alarm Clock Sure Works Good!
Every morning like clockwork my local rooster starts crowing around 5 am every morning. Since my arrival in Barbados about 8 weeks or so a go this rooster hasn’t had one single day off, now that is what I call dedication.
This rooster that I now call Huckleberry, why because I wanted too! Would be a fantastic alarm clock if only I could train it to start crowing about 7am instead of 5am. But the chances of that happening are non-existent.
Back home in Scotland the closet rooster to my home would have been about 5 miles away, I would have had to jump in my car and drive for 15 minutes if I wanted to hear the delightful sound of one crowing.
I suppose I have now got kind of use to the rooster wakening me up every morning, when I first moved to Barbados, I must admit I found it a complete pain in the butt. But what could I do? Not a lot because the rooster and it’s family live in a yard at a house next door to us!
I find Barbados such an endearing Island to live in; we live in what is seemingly the biggest residential area in the whole of Barbados, yet it is almost like living in a wee village in Scotland. There is maybe lots more houses here, but it still has a rural feeling about it. All the palm and coconut trees and I suppose the overgrown building plots that are scattered, all over the place, help to achieve a rural feeling.
As I’m sitting writing this article at 11am I can periodically here the rooster crowing, it makes me feel as if I’m living in the middle of the countryside miles away from civilisation. I not sure if the rooster is trying to crow in tune to the Stone Roses whom I’m listening too, at last I have fund someone else in Barbados that appreciates good music.
I have quickly discovered if you want to get an adequate number of hours sleep every night, it is imperative that I go to bed at a reasonable time. Because I know one thing for sure, that pesky rooster will be crowing at 5am whether I’m ready or not, giving me my early morning wake up call !
