Lost In the Capital City of Barbados, It Wasn’t So Bad
Yesterday I took myself of to Bridgetown in Barbados, which is for the uninitiated the capital of Barbados. In comparison to London, Edinburgh, Paris, Barcelona, New York and other major capital cities it is a tiny wee place. But what it lacks in size it sure does make up with in ambiance, character and uniqueness.
I personally always head into Bridgetown early on in the morning because, after all it is Barbados and the sun usually gets brighter and hotter as the day goes on, and for me I would surely melt if I was to wander around the City centre during the mid day sun.
The main shopping street in the city centre is called Broad Street and this is where Cave Shepherd is located, I suppose every man, woman and their children that have ever been shopping in Bridgetown will have been in this shop. There is also countless other shops of all descriptions along this entire street, including countless fancy jewellers and luckily some good places to eat, which is great news, because shopping makes me real hungry.
But for me the real character, enjoyment and fun of shopping in Bridgetown is found in all the little side streets leading off Broad Street. This is where you will find loads of interesting shops selling everything you can think of including clothes, gifts, food, lotions and potions of all descriptions.
It is fairly easy to get lost in the warren of little streets in the City centre in Bridgetown, but fortunately it won’t take you too long to find your bearings again. That is the beauty of Bridgetown for me; even getting lost is an adventure because it usually means you will find some more interesting shops to have a browse around.
The one thing that I find ever so slightly annoying about walking along Broad Street is constantly being asked if I want a taxi, when and if I want a taxi I will go and find a taxi!
What I personally love about Bridgetown shopping is that when I need a wee break from the hustle and bustle of it all, I don’t have to travel too far to escape the madness. I head either to the boardwalk or over to Carlisle Bay where I will sit, relax and enjoy a drink and some food. Today I only made it as far as the boardwalk, and it was relaxing sitting watching the boats and looking out to the sea enjoying life in Barbados.
