Hello there,
Many would argue that a cold beer is hardly more 'useful' than a piece of jewellery or a pack of cigarettes. You definitely make some good points - there is a problem with beach harassment and drugs on many of our local beaches and throughout the island. This seems to be one of the unfortunate consequences of a tourism and capitalist-based society. This is a fact that is hardly ever mentioned by visitors in their assessment of Caribbean islands and culture.
Your post unintentionally (I assume) others and demeans the many legitimate, licensed hardworking beach vendors who make an honest living making and selling their craft on beaches throughout the island, and who contribute meaningfully to our island's economy. Not all beach vendors are "pirates" and "pests".
I don't mean to police your blog, but it would be nice if visitors could sometimes contextualize their opinions on the Caribbean in the wider framework of tourism, capitalism and consumerism in general. Beach vendors do not operate in a vacum(sp)from these elements.
Look forward to reading more from you.
