Old Stone Jetty, Oh What a Great Place

I took this picture of an old stone jetty at the hotel, which I was staying at St Lawrence Gap in Barbados. I use to love standing on that old ruined jetty watching the waves or the sun setting at the end of the day. For me it is a very special place, it may be on the grounds of the hotel, but there would usually never be very many people at the jetty, so my family and myself would most of the time have it all to ourselves.

What can I say apart from what a place, what a view and that I shall return.

I remember this jetty quite well. I used to fish off this jetty when I was a kid. The hotel is rostrevor, a place my family used to always stay at in the seventies and eighties. I went back last December and fished off that jetty for old times sake and caught a flounder. My brother used to catch eels and squid there and once caught a puppy shark. What a beautiful island Barbados is, but when I visited there last year I noticed alot of construction and traffic and was dissappointed with what I thought was the destruction of a great place to visit. I hope to return next year and hear the sound of those waves crashing all night long.

I stayed at the Rostrevor not so long ago and loved it’s wee beach and standing on that jetty watching the sun set. I know what you mean about the traffic problem and I hope this Government has the foresight to take a stand against over construction of the island.

I also grew up staying at the rostrevor, i always used to sit on the jetty and tan, it was usually nice and breezy. i think they should try and fix it up, after they do their final renovations on the third building, which by the way i loved. Those were great apts, oh so breezy at night..going down in April for 3 weeks, and of course staying at rostrevor, love the place…

It would be good to see that old jetty fixed up and brought back to it’s former glory. I loved standing on that jetty with the wife and kid watching the sun set.

You sound like you have alot of memories, just like me…When i am down in April, i will ask or suggest that maybe they fix it up, cause even though i have great memories, it has potential to be fixed up abit. I will tell Robin to check out this site, she also has memories, she was just a wee kid too, she grew up running around that place…

If the Jetty was brought back to life, I think it would be something that guests at the hotel would truly appreciate. It would be a shame to see it get to the stage of deteriation where it isn’t safe to walk along it anymore.

Well it has finally arrived, in 2 short days i will walk on to the Jetty, does not go out as far as it used too, but i will think about you and this site when i am on it….

Hey Karen have a great time when your there, I hope to visit there again in December. I remember those big german watch dogs that the owners used to have there, I think the owners name was Teddy Edgil. They were nice people and Rostrevor was a great place to stay and fish at night. I remember going to the pepperpot for some evening entertainment and seeing the Merrymen play there. So many good memories there. HAve a safe trip Karen.

Hi Paul, thanks for the wishes…Ya the Edgehill’s used to own it, then they sold it to the Clarke’s many years ago, they still run it. Mr. Clarke himself has passed on, but his daughters and family are running it now…They are very nice people..I remember the dogs..lol. I used to go to Pepperpot also, listen to the Merrymen then their kids formed the Merryboys…They used to have a good floor show also, my dad would always win the Limbo, and that was after a few good stiff ones, he would always win a bottle of rum..lol. Anyway looking forward to getting there tomorrow..Will have a rum punch for you while looking out pass the Jetty and into the crystal blue sea.. thanks again..

Hi Karen, I hope you have a great time, I was at the Jetty not so long ago helping the wife with a wedding that she had organised on the beach there, and what fantastic and beautiful place it was for such a romantic occasion.

I am unfortunately stuck in London for a couple of months, and for some reason I am truly missing the nice warm weather and the crystal blue sea…have a rum punch for me too.

  12. karen on April 18th, 2009 2:13 am

Thanks Garry, i will have a couple of rum’s for you.LOL…Almost there…can’t wait and cannot sleep.

Hi, back from my trip. Had a great time..Sat on the jetty alot..Good place to tan..Lots of wind..Still the same, sat at the end, with waves splashing up, lots of crabs…lol. It was great to just sit there and stare out to the sea…Miss it already..I might go back with my sister for a week in june..It is depressing the first couple of weeks being home. I miss the sea. All in all it was a great trip, more good memories..

  14. garryaw on May 19th, 2009 5:30 pm

It sure is a nice spot to just sit and relax and take things real easy. I use to love standing there watching the sun setting, it was truly a beautiful site. Ah those crabs, there use to be so many of them, I wonder if they bite hard?

The good thing about holidays, especially good ones and that is the wonderful memories that they give us. I’m unfortunately going to be stuck in London, (life and circumstances!) for a few months and I really cant wait to get back to Barbados and all those things that I love about the place. I fortunately have a bottle of Mount Gay Sugar Cane Brandy to keep going till I get back.

Hey Karen, Glad you had a good trip. I am planning on going back to my parents home Barbados in April of 2010 but this time with my wife. The topic came up last week about going down next year and meeting my brother who will be there on business and now I am really starting to get excited like a kid again. There is something about feeling that warm sea breeze and putting your toes in the white soft sand at Rockley, and looking out into the sea on that old broken down jette at Rostrevor, watching the big ships go by and the sun setting and fishing of course. I will find the time no matter how busy I will be next year. So many memories there as a kid. I just want to be there right now and listen to the crickits at night, and the waves crashing one after another after another until I fall asleep.

Hey Karen, Sounds like a great idea. Right now the plan is for sometime between April 12 and 26. I will keep you informed. April seems like so far away but the time passes so fast when your so busy. My grandfather worked for Doorly’s rum factory for 25 years so that is rum of choice for me and of course that great Banks beer. Cheers.
