The Heavens Opened And The Rains Came Down In Barbados
Yesterday the rains came pouring down in Barbados, which is nothing new I suppose during hurricane season. I had to venture into to Bridgetown to pay the water bill, which is kind of poetic, considering the crazy driving conditions that I had the misfortune to experience shortly after I paid the bill.
I was heading to collect the kid from School when the heavens opened and the rain came lashing down in Barbados. I have driven through bigger and more powerful rain falls many times back home in Scotland. The rain wasn’t the real problem; it was the fact that in certain areas throughout this island there isn’t much of a drainage system in place. Which as you can imagine causes real problems.
Well yesterday I experienced one of those flooded areas, I was driving along a road fairly close to the city centre, when the road became almost like a river. It was unbelievable, at one stage I swear it felt like I was driving a boat and not a car. The road was flooded for about 1 km and it got deeper and deeper the further along I went. Turing around wasn’t an option due to the congested traffic on the road.
I was praying like crazy that my engine never flooded and that the current never took control of the car, an even bigger worry was driving into a big pot hole or part of the road that had been washed away. Fortunately I somehow managed to navigate my way through the river road. I will tell you I was so happy when I reached dry land.
My joy wasn’t to last for very long, because a few kilometres further along the road I encountered another road that had been turned into a river. It was complete chaos; a van on the opposite side of the road had one wheel stuck down a big hole near the side of the road. The water must have been about 20 inches deep at least. On my side of the road a young woman had a shovel stuck down a hole to show passing motorists that they should stay well clear.
The was my first experience of driving on flooded roads since my arrival in Barbados and it was a crazy time, but as they say life is an adventure and this sure as hell was an adventure.
Like most people here in Barbados I have a few issues with the roads in Barbados and you can read all about my viewpoint on the lack of pavements on the island right here, Barbados Sure As Hell Needs More Pavements.

Bridgetown, BARBADOS
[...] I know quite a few people that carry two spare tyres just in case they have a real unlucky day. You really need to keep your eyes peeled to avoid the potholes. It kind of gets crazy when its raining as the roads do flood real bad in Barbados and of course the pot holes get filled with water and you cant see the dam holes. Also the you wouldn’t believe how some of the roads here just seem to crumble when they flood, I don’t know what kind of tarmac they use here but they need to change it real quick. An article I wrote about my recent experience of driving through floods in Barbados, The Heavens Opened And The Rains Came Down In Barbados. [...]
