Fighting Boredom In Barbados
Last night it was another one of those boring nights here in Barbados, if I was back home in Scotland I would have headed down to the multiplex cinema or the indie cinema and went and watched a good movie. As much as I love life in Barbados, there comes a time when things get a wee bit boring and there is just nothing to do.
We have cable TV but it gets boring watching all the various American programs all the time. I wish someone would open up a ten-pin bowling alley or a proper cinema in Barbados. There is plenty of those stupid slots places, which I personally don’t see the point of, if I waned to gamble I will go to a casino or organise a private game of Texas No Limit Hold em and play a game of skill, which also happens to be great fun.
Barbados definitely lacks things to do; I just beats me why some business man with serious money man doesn’t grab the bull by the horns and create something such as a I mentioned, a ten pin bowling complex or multiplex cinema, there must surely be a profitable market for it here.
I think the problem stems from the fact that there are too many people living in Barbados that have never travelled anywhere and as a result they are not a aware of what exists in the big wide world. Also because so many old people come back to there homeland of Barbados to retire after spending decades working abroad, they are too old and boring to do anything apart from sitting in there front porches talking other peoples business.
Fortunately fighting boredom is only an occasional problem for me in Barbados and life really isn’t too bad here.

We do have a wonderful multiplex cinema -The Olympus complex has at least ten different films showing each week with food and drinks much less than your UK Showcase chain. The Coca Cola, for example is just five dollars as opposed to £5 in the UK and just $15 a movie as opposed to £7.00
Secondly, the drive in is a wonderful experience that shows two films for just $15 and in the rian sometimes.
I don’t work for either but they do provide good value, but I’d like to see a bowling alley as you mention.
Hi I have wrote about my experience at the Globe drive in and thought it was a fantastic experience and hopefully they will show some movies I want to see in the near future. I wouldn’t exactly call The Olympus a real multiplex cinema, I’m use to places offering extrmely comfortable seating and offering at least 10 different movies to choose form, not 2 or 3 movies. I was in mulitplex a few months ago in Glasgow that offered 17 different movies to choose from on the same night, even I manged to find a few movies worth watching.
I’ve been lucky at the drive in then; they nearly always show top line movies! The mutiplex has eleven movies on this week, remembering that the population in Barbados is only just above a Sauchiehall Street busy day and the VIP has great seats. All the top movies come here, even the top Brit films, but often a little later on. Bond might be here soon.
Hey Jock,
I hear Miss Ram is building a bowling alley next to her Casa Grande Hotel.
Things may be looking up for your down days.
If it happens I’m sure it will be a good money earner for her. A bowling alley sure would be good news for Barbados, and of course myself for when things get a wee bit boring.
I too 1ove the drive in, great chi1dish fun. I can find a movie once a week and do you want to go to the movies more often than that? What about a11 the great p1aces to eat out? P1enty of great rum shops to hang out in and various different fish fries to go to. As for bow1ing why not go and hear some music, do some dancing, go on a pub craw1 p1ay poo1, invite guests for a dinner…you can do most things in Barbados that you can do in Europe. You cou1d go riding aong the East Coast! The Museum is great and you cou1d become a member, 1earn more about the ancient history of Barbados, get invited to 1ectures or activities. I miss a decent bookshop though. You dont have to be rich to have a good time either.
